* This report is based on research conducted by the “Safeguarding the Heritage of the Near East Initiative,” funded by the US Department of State. Monthly reports reflect reporting from a variety of sources and may contain unverified material. As such, they should be treated as preliminary and subject to change.

Key points from this report:

  • ISIL released a video showing multiple episodes of intentional destruction of antiquities at the Mosul Museum and the archaeological site of Nineveh. In the Mosul Museum, the assailants destroyed sculptures from the city of Hatra, as well as Neo-Assyrian sculptures, partial reconstructions, and replicas from sites in the Mosul area. The video also shows the intentional destruction of colossi at Nineveh’s Nergal Gate. (pp. 108–132)
  • ISIL militants burned large numbers of books from Mosul’s libraries. (pp. 133–134)
  • ASOR CHI has completed Incident Reports on damage to sites in northern Iraq in the Nineveh and Salah ad-Din Provinces and will continue to update these reports and complete additional reports. ISIL deliberate destructions of heritage places represent the vast majority of damage. (pp. 9–10, 54–101)
  • ISIL militants reportedly destroyed the al-Khidr Mosque in Mosul. (pp. 102–107)
  • ASOR CHI has updated its Incident Report on damage to the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus (pp. 11–23)
